Understand the Treatment

What Is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a prescription medication in a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists. GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone involved in appetite, digestion, and blood sugar regulation.

How it helps with weight loss

One of the hardest parts of weight loss is hunger — you can build a great plan in the morning and still fight your appetite all day. Semaglutide works on the biology behind appetite and satiety. The medication supports the plan. It doesn’t replace it.

Wegovy vs. Ozempic: semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy, FDA-approved for long-term weight reduction and maintenance in qualifying adults, and in Ozempic, FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. Your provider determines which medication and indication are appropriate for you. We evaluate first and prescribe when appropriate.

How It Works

Your 12-Week Semaglutide Journey

Everything starts with a complimentary get-to-know-you consultation — no commitment and no need to qualify yourself first.

Week 1

Establish Your Baseline

We review your weight history, what you’ve tried, medical history, current medications, lifestyle and goals. If semaglutide is appropriate, your provider builds an individualized plan starting at a lower dose with gradual escalation based on tolerability. Your first ShapeScale scan sets the starting point.

Week 6

Measure Your Progress

At the halfway point we review weight and body-composition trends, appetite, protein intake, medication tolerance and side effects — then decide whether anything in the plan should change.

Week 12

See Your Transformation

Your ShapeScale comparison shows how your body changed since day one. From there we discuss continued weight loss, treatment adjustments, body contouring, or a shift toward maintenance. Week 12 is a milestone, not necessarily the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Semaglutide

What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, a type of medication that acts on biological pathways involved in appetite, fullness, digestion, and blood sugar regulation.

For appropriate patients, semaglutide can help reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, which can support reduced calorie intake and weight loss.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in FDA-approved Wegovy, which is approved for long-term weight reduction and maintenance in qualifying patients when used alongside reduced-calorie nutrition and increased physical activity.

Semaglutide activates GLP-1 receptors and affects pathways involved in appetite and satiety.

For some patients, that means feeling less hungry, feeling satisfied sooner, and finding it easier to eat smaller portions.

It also delays gastric emptying, which is one reason semaglutide can affect fullness as well as the absorption of some oral medications.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient.

Wegovy and Ozempic are FDA-approved brand-name medications containing semaglutide, but they have different FDA-approved indications.

For weight management, Wegovy is specifically FDA-approved for qualifying patients. Your provider will determine which treatment, if any, is medically appropriate for you.

Candidacy is determined individually.

FDA-approved Wegovy is indicated for long-term weight reduction in adults with obesity and adults with overweight who also have at least one weight-related condition.

Your provider will consider your BMI, health history, medications, risk factors, goals, and other clinical factors before determining whether semaglutide is appropriate.

There is no single rate that applies to everyone.

Response varies based on your starting point, treatment, nutrition, activity, adherence, medication tolerance, and individual biology.

Our goal isn’t simply the fastest possible loss.

We want to look at sustainable progress, body composition, and what you’re losing along the way.

The administration schedule depends on the specific semaglutide product and treatment prescribed.

FDA-approved Wegovy injection is administered once weekly and uses a gradual dose-escalation schedule intended to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.

Your provider will give you specific instructions for the medication you are prescribed.

Not necessarily.

Dosing decisions are individualized and should be made by your medical provider based on the medication prescribed, your response, tolerability, and treatment goals.

More medication isn’t automatically better.

With FDA-approved Wegovy, commonly reported adverse reactions include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue, indigestion, dizziness, abdominal bloating, belching, gas, reflux, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Your provider will review the risks and potential side effects associated with your specific treatment before you begin.

Semaglutide isn’t appropriate for everyone.

Current Wegovy labeling contraindicates its use in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) and in patients with a known serious hypersensitivity to semaglutide or its ingredients.

Other medical conditions, medications, pregnancy, planned pregnancy, and individual risk factors may also affect candidacy.

Your medical provider will review your history before prescribing treatment.

Yes. Prescription semaglutide has important warnings and potential risks.

Current FDA labeling includes warnings regarding acute pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, acute kidney injury due to volume depletion, severe gastrointestinal reactions, hypersensitivity reactions, diabetic retinopathy complications in certain patients with type 2 diabetes, increased heart rate, and pulmonary aspiration during anesthesia or deep sedation.

Your provider should review the risks, benefits, alternatives, warning signs, and your individual medical history before treatment.

Semaglutide used for weight reduction should not be used during pregnancy. Current Wegovy prescribing information instructs patients using it for weight reduction to discontinue the medication when pregnancy is recognized. Because semaglutide remains in the body for an extended period, the prescribing information also recommends discontinuing it at least two months before a planned pregnancy.

Because pounds don’t tell the whole story.

ShapeScale helps us establish a 3D baseline and track changes in your body throughout your journey.

Instead of asking only “How much weight did I lose?”, we can look at how your measurements, shape, and body composition are changing over time.

Physical activity is an important part of weight management, and resistance training can be particularly valuable during significant weight loss because preserving lean muscle matters.

You don’t need to suddenly become a gym person.

We want to help you build movement and strength habits that are appropriate for your health and realistic for your lifestyle.

When appropriate, yes.

Medical weight loss addresses the larger weight-management goal, while Ultimate Contour can help target specific areas and address contour, skin firmness, texture, and the appearance of cellulite.

We’ll determine whether adding body contouring makes sense based on where you are in your weight-loss journey and your individual goals.

Twelve weeks is a progress milestone, not necessarily the end of treatment.

We’ll evaluate your weight, ShapeScale progress, body changes, medication response, goals, and overall progress and determine what makes sense next.

Your next phase may involve continued active weight loss, treatment adjustments, additional body-transformation goals, or eventually transitioning toward maintenance.

Weight regain can occur after stopping weight-management medication.

That’s why we don’t want maintenance to be an afterthought.

Your provider will discuss your long-term strategy based on your response, medical needs, lifestyle, and goals.
